WHY DOES GOD PERMIT THE INNOCENT TO SUFFER
(09-23-2010)

Of course all of us have more than likely contemplated that question—perhaps a number of times in life. I am offering a class Theodicy: where is God in human suffering? It will take place in the narthex beginning on Tuesday 11/16 from 6:30PM until 8PM for approximately 8 weeks once a week except for the Holiday period. Some of our readings will be secular as well as spiritual and from scripture. Our reading selections include: Albert Camus, The Plague and the play: The Misunderstanding; Elie Wiesel’s book, Night; The Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky (special focus on Ivan’s “poem” the Grand Inquisitor); Gustavo Gutierrez: On Job, God-Talk and the Suffering (I was fortunate to take a course from him in Berkeley) Bishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu, The Divine Intention; Pope John Paul II On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering, and a variety of scripture selections. If you plan on attending the readings/homework assignments are a requirement for the benefit of all.
There will be a nominal charge for materials as the class progresses. You must sign up in order to determine the quantities needed. The initial fee $15.00 for copying costs and copyrights. Of course you are welcome to bring friends. If you plan on attending the class, please call the rectory at 707-226-9379 x 10 to register. Blessings, Fr. Gordon
